When to Draw Names for Secret Santa 2026 (Dates and Timeline)

Somewhere around Halloween, someone in the family chat asks it: "So when are we doing names this year?" The short answer is three to four weeks before the gift exchange. The useful answer depends on when the exchange actually happens, because drawing too early means people forget, and drawing too late sends everyone to the mall on December 23.

This guide uses the 2026 calendar to give you real dates.

The 2026 holiday calendar

Before you pick a draw date, look at what's around it:

  • Thanksgiving: Thursday, November 26.
  • Black Friday: Friday, November 27.
  • Cyber Monday: November 30.
  • Christmas Eve: Thursday, December 24.
  • Christmas Day: Friday, December 25.
  • New Year's Eve: Thursday, December 31.

With Christmas on a Friday, a lot of families will do their exchange on Thursday night or turn it into a long weekend. Office holiday parties will squeeze into the first three Fridays of December, especially December 11 and 18.

When to draw, by exchange date

Take your exchange date and count back three or four weeks, nudged to fit around Thanksgiving. Three weeks is enough to shop and wait for a delivery. Four weeks gives breathing room to anyone who wants to catch the Black Friday sales.

Exchange dateDraw names between
Friday, Dec 11 (office party)Nov 13 and Nov 20
Friday, Dec 18 (office or friends)Nov 20 and Nov 25
Saturday, Dec 19, or Sunday, Dec 20Nov 21 and Nov 26
Thursday, Dec 24 (Christmas Eve)Nov 23 and Nov 30
Thursday, Dec 31 (New Year's Eve)Nov 30 and Dec 7

If some people in your group live far away and will ship their gift, move everything a week earlier. December shipping is unpredictable, and nobody wants to reveal their Secret Santa with "it's on the way, I promise."

The Thanksgiving draw

Many families draw names over Thanksgiving dinner, because it's the last time everyone is in one room before Christmas. It's a good instinct with one flaw: someone always misses Thanksgiving, and the person running the draw ends up knowing every pair.

You can keep the tradition and fix the flaw. Set up the group before Thanksgiving, send the link, and press the button at the table so everyone gets their match on their own phone at the same moment. People who couldn't make it still get theirs.

Why drawing before Black Friday helps

A group that draws by November 26 has a practical advantage: everyone knows who they're buying for when prices drop. A gift that would blow the budget in mid-December might fit nicely on Black Friday. For low-budget exchanges, that matters.

A Secret Santa timeline for 2026

This works for most groups exchanging on Christmas Eve. For other dates, slide it.

By mid-November: agree on the basics

Decide who's in, the date and place of the exchange, and the spending limit. Arguing about the budget after the draw is how fights start, because everyone already has a gift in mind.

This is also when you settle the house rules. Can couples draw each other? Parents and kids? If not, write it down so you can set exclusions in the draw. The Secret Santa rules cover the common variations.

Week of November 16: send the invite

Create the group and drop the link in the family or team chat. Give people a short deadline to join, five days or so. Without a deadline there's always an uncle who'll "look at it later."

November 23 to 26: run the draw

Once everyone has joined, draw. If someone is missing, chase them first. Drawing without them and redoing it later is the fastest way to ruin the secret.

You have two options. If everyone will be in the same room, the Secret Santa generator draws from a list of names right in your browser, and people pass the phone around to see their match. If you want each person to see only their own match, with nobody seeing anyone else's, create a group in the app and share the link. The full walkthrough is in how to draw Secret Santa online.

November 27 to December 6: wish lists and shopping

Ask everyone to fill in their wish list right after the draw. Whoever drew someone with a ready list can shop the sales. Whoever drew someone without a list can ask a question through the anonymous chat without giving themselves away. Stuck for ideas? Our Secret Santa gift ideas are sorted by price.

December 7 to 20: last call

Two weeks before the exchange, send a reminder. Anyone who hasn't bought yet still has time to get it delivered. In-store shoppers should avoid the last weekend before Christmas if they can.

December 24: the reveal

Set aside a moment just for the exchange, before dessert and before half the family falls asleep. Reveals are more fun when each person gives one clue before handing over the gift. The Christmas Secret Santa guide has a few formats.

What if it's an office exchange?

Work exchanges have an extra wrinkle: PTO. A lot of people are out the week of Christmas, so the office party lands in the first half of December. In that case, the draw needs to happen by November 20. Sending the invite in early November, together with the party announcement, takes care of it.

At work, the joining deadline has to be firm. Whoever hasn't joined by draw day sits this one out. It sounds harsh, but it's what saves you from redoing a draw for fifty people. The company Secret Santa guide has more on budgets and reveals.

Calendar mistakes that cause trouble

  • Drawing before agreeing on a budget. Someone will spend $10 and get a $60 gift.
  • Picking the same night as half the group's office party. Ask about work schedules first.
  • Forgetting the travelers. People spending Christmas elsewhere can still play, but they need to ship early or arrange a handoff.
  • Leaving wish lists for December. By then Black Friday is over and your Secret Santa bought blind.

Quick answers

How far in advance should we draw Secret Santa names? Three to four weeks before the exchange. For a Christmas Eve exchange, between November 23 and 30.

Can we draw in October? You can, but people tend to forget. If you draw early, keep things going with wish lists and anonymous hints.

Does Secret Santa need an even number of people? No. The draw works with any number from three up (with two, each person already knows who they have). Everyone gives one gift and gets one gift.

Will the organizer know who has whom? Not if you draw in the app. Each person sees only their own match, including whoever created the group.

Start with the invite

O Amigo Secreto keeps the draw date and the exchange date in the group, shows who has joined and notifies everyone when the draw is done. There are wish lists, an anonymous chat for hints and exclusions for people who shouldn't draw each other.
